A fishing pier crafted from old concrete bridge sections and iron fence railings juts into a pond near my home. Through the winter it’s a favorite hangout for a gang of unruly mallards that lie in wait for well-meaning providers of donuts and other questionable foodstuff. Come spring the band disperses, driven more by the urge to mate than by their bellies. Mallard coutships can be as rowdy as their food squabblines, with a great deal of splashing and squawking. From time to time, though, I spot a pair twirling the water below the pier in a quiet pas de deux.
